Tips for a Shopping Ban

Every few months I impose a shopping ban on myself.

The rules are pretty easy: I can only spend money on groceries (fast food doesn't count), food for the pigs/cats and absolute necessities like shampoo. I can't buy any clothes, accessories, make-up/bath products, books or movies.

The shopping bans are always a lot easier than I thought. That's partially because I have strong willpower, and partially because a lot of people think I can't do it and it's in my nature to prove them wrong. If a shopaholic like me can survive, than so can you!

Below I've put together a few of my personal tips that have helped me out during this shopping ban. This mini-guide is specifically geared towards fashionistas with overflowing closets, so the tips will focus on how to avoid temptation and rework your existing wardrobe. There's also a few tips geared towards saving in general.

♥ If you use shopping to combat your emotions (like me), STOP. It is only a temporary fix! Figure out something else that will help you relax and take your mind off things when you are stressed/sad/angry/lonely. Meditate, read a book, go for a walk/run, vent to a friend, start an art project, clean, etc. Retail therapy is just a vicious loop that will make you feel worse when your credit card statement comes in!

♥ Choose a goal to work towards. Maybe all of the money you save by not spending mindlessly can go towards a mini vacation, or your dream car, or a new laptop! It feels amazing when you reach that goal and you realize you're there because you didn't fritter away your money on lip gloss or cheap shoes!

♥ Let your friends and family know about your shopping ban. They will [or at least they should] support you and help you work towards your goal.

♥ Learn how to fix broken stuff. I once ripped the strap on a tank top and I mentioned to my friend I needed to buy a new one to replace it. She looked at me in shock and said "Why don't you sew it?!" Look up tutorials online or ask your mother to show you how to sew, replace a button, or patch up a hole. It's such a simple task that will help extend the life of your favourite clothes!

♥ Also: Pay attention to the washing directions. Wash dark clothing in cold water to prevent the colour from fading and staining light clothes, and either hang it or lay it flat to dry to help retain the shape. Hand-wash your delicates. I've lost many clothing articles to evil dryers or just by not realizing dark blue skirts will ultimately stain the white skirt right beside it. Take care of your wardrobe!

♥ Pick a hobby to help fill up your spare time. I often shop when I'm bored, so having a fun hobby helped alleviate that boredom. Write letters/e-mails, blog, learn how to sew [winky wink], garden or read! If you love to read, I'd suggest going through your bookshelf and making a stack of all the books you haven't read yet! If you enjoy watching movies, stick to Netflix instead of hitting the movie theater.

♥ Shop your closet. I know that black tunic you want to buy would probably look great with your coloured skinnies, but you do realize you have several other loose black tops that would work just as well, right? On your next free day, dig through that overflowing closet and find some gems you've probably forgotten you even have. Try out new outfit combinations.

♥ Realize how much money you're spending on products/services you don't need. Do you really need to get a manicure every month? What if you deleted your subscriptions to magazines you're not really interested in, or got rid of some internet/cell phone/whatever services you don't require?

♥ Get rid of the clothes you don't want to wear. It's just clogging up your closet and hiding all of those gems I previously mentioned! You can donate it, sell it, or....

♥ Organize a clothing swap with friends! (Disregard this rule if you're just trying to get rid of clothing.) This is a fun way to switch up your wardrobe without spending any money. Decide on a set number of pieces to bring and have fun swapping!

♥ Make a list of stuff you want to buy during this shopping ban. At the end of the ban, read your list over and check off everything you no longer want to buy. Personally, I decided I needed shiny leggings despite never wearing leggings and so I resolved to buy them when my ban was done. A week later I came to my senses.

♥ Also: Use this list to help imagine outfits for whatever you'd like to buy. How much wear can you really get out of that skirt? Are you going to need to buy an entire new outfit to match it? If you can't wear it with several items already in your closet, it's not worth it.

♥ Rock the 'price per wear' rule with items you already own. Basically, take the price of an item and divide it by the number of times you wear it in one month. An expensive coat that you wear every single day that helps you look polished is basically priceless. A dress you bought for one night out and never wore again doesn't make the cut. When you're shopping your closet, make a resolution to wear all of those expensive one-time outfits several times to really get the most out of your money.

♥ Organize outings with your friends that don't involve spending time at the mall. It can be difficult to resist temptation when everyone else is shopping! Instead, why don't you....Spend the day at the beach. Have a movie marathon (Netflix it or have everyone bring a DVD). Go for a nature walk or do yoga in the park.

♥ Avoid temptation by deleting those pesky store newsletters emblazoned with 'End of Summer Sale!!' Don't read fashion magazines because you're going to end up wanting that hot new product. It's a lot easier to stick to your ban when flashy deals aren't being shoved in your face!

♥ Try your hand at DIY and re-make some of the items you already wear! Some lace and different buttons can help transform your boring cardigan into something that looks brand-new. If you see an item in stores, try re-making it at home!

♥ If you buy coffee/tea every day, stop! Make it at home in the morning and bring it to work in a travel mug. $1.60 every day doesn't seem like much, but it adds up to $48 a month! Save that money and buy yourself a $5 box of tea to last the month.

♥ Also: Make your lunches at home! You could buy yourself a sandwich for $5 every day....or you can buy yourself a loaf of bread, an entire package of deli meat, and a few other tidbits to make yourself a cheap lunch every day for a week.

♥ Find all of your make-up and bath/beauty products and use them. Okay, I'm really bad for this one. I don't need 100+ bottles of nail polish [half of which are varying shades of pink...] It can be tempting to buy another bottle of cleanser just because it's on sale or a 'new' shade of nail polish, but try checking out what's in your beauty arsenal. I guarantee you'll probably realize you have so much stuff to use up that you don't need another one!

Have you ever tried a shopping ban? Will you ever? Let me know in the comments!

♥ Winter Outfits ♥

Today I'm sharing three of my favourite tried-and-true outfit formulas for winter.

Winter Outfits

When the temperatures dip before freezing, you can't go wrong with fleece-lined leggings and cozy long socks! Let your socks peek out the top of some cute riding boots. A graphic shirt and the warmest cardigan you can find will finish this look off nicely.

Winter Outfits v2

I actually like wearing skirts in the winter. They look so cute layered with a slouchy sweater! Tights will keep your legs cozy [the higher the denier count, the thicker the tights!] and take a look around for stylish ankle boots! I found mine for $35 at Wal-mart, woo. For a bit of extra warmth, layer a pair of long black socks or legwarmers over your tights.

Winter Outfits v3

Layered knits are probably the easiest/laziest way to get dressed in the winter. Basically, layer all the knits you can find!

What's your go-to outfit formula for winter? Let me know in the comments!

A Fresh Start for the Soul

♥ Forgive someone. “Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” This year, forgive someone who hurt you. If you can't face them physically, I recommend visualizing the person and what they did to you, and simply saying to that image in your mind "I forgive you." Allowing yourself to forgive allows your heart to heal.

♥ Start a vision board. This year, start collecting images and quotes of what inspires you. Stick 'em in frames, on your wall, on a board, in your dayplanner, or on your mirror. Keep yourself constantly surrounded by what inspires you and reminds you to always focus on your dreams. Additionally, explore new inspirations.

♥ Make a new friend. Say hi to the barista who always remembers your order. Introduce yourself to your new neighbour. Join a penpal community and start writing letters to someone halfway around the globe. There are so many opportunities for friendship out there!

♥ Learn how to speak another language. You can buy a book, download an app, or join www.MyLanguageExchange.com!

♥ Volunteer your time. Helping others is so good for the soul! You can volunteer at an animal shelter, a soup kitchen, a youth drop-in center, the old folks' home, or you can offer to walk your friend's dog while she's away or baby-sit a single mother's kids. The experiences you gain will stay with you always.

♥ Make a wish jar. I am a firm believer in the power of wishes, visualization and positive thinking. Grab a pretty jar, sprinkle some glitter inside and place it somewhere you can see it every day. Whenever you have a wish, jot it down on a piece of paper and toss it in the jar! I like to go through my wishes every few weeks and marvel at the wishes that have come true or that I no longer require.

♥ Start a relaxing hobby. Having something to look forward to at the end of the day is always nice. You could try your hand at knitting, writing, or video games!

♥ Drink tea. For all of the health benefits, of course, but also because it is so lovely to brew a pot of tea, sit down with a blanket [or a cat], a book, a teacup and relax.

♥ Count your blessings. Every Thursday I try to take part in Gala Darling's 'Things I Love Thursday.' You can write your list every Thursday, every day, on Facebook, Tumblr, your blog, or in a tiny journal only you can read. When you're having a bad day, read through your lists and realize how blessed you truly are.

♥ Schedule daily cuddle breaks with a pet. Or a baby. Instant stress reliever and an excellent way to start your day off right.

Learn how to cook or bake. These winter months are the perfect time to learn how to cook or bake something amazing. Besides, isn't it so much nicer being able to make food yourself instead of buying it all the time?

♥ Reach out to your friends. Feeling guilty about any friends you haven't spoken to in a while? Call them up and ask them out for coffee! Resolve to spend more times with the people who are important to you this year.

♥ Break a bad habit. Promise yourself this year will be the year you stop biting your nails, or smoking cigarettes, or living paycheck to paycheck. It can take a bit of time and self-discipline but I have faith in you!

♥ Find a talisman for the new year. Preferably something that reminds you of what you want to achieve this year, whether it's physical, spiritual, or what have you. Remember to wear it often, if not always, and reach for your dreams.

♥ Start a healthy habit. Whether it's daily green smoothies, taking your dog for more walks, or cutting coffee out of your diet. Promise yourself 2016 will be a healthier year!

A Fresh Start for 2016 ♥

♥ Clean out your inbox! Delete old e-mails, unsubscribe from mailing lists and delete unused folders. Then you can reply to those e-mails you've been procrastinating on and file everything else!

♥ Go through your wardrobe with reckless abandon. If it's stained or holey, throw it out! If it's in good condition, donate or sell it! Tip: If you haven't worn it in forever but you're still holding onto it, give yourself one month to work it into an outfit you love. If you still haven't managed that by the end of the month, it's time to get rid of it.

♥ File loose papers. Pay stubs, tax returns, and old letters can be stored in a big folder. If it isn't important, recycle it. [Be sure to shred it beforehand if it has any personal information.) Remember to check the dates on receipts, too! If it's past the return/exchange date, throw it out.

♥ Give your underwear drawer a serious overhaul. If it doesn't fit properly, is frayed or falling apart, get rid of it! Then you can make a list of what you're lacking. (Nude undergarments? A classy black push-up bra?) P.S: Do the same for your socks and tights! Take advantage of the end-of-year sales.

♥ Make a stack of books you want to read this year. If there's anything you're not interested in reading, consider donating it or passing it along to a friend.

♥ Clear out your phone contacts! Delete anyone you haven't spoken to in the past year. Additionally, make sure you have all of the important numbers you need.

♥ Tackle your make-up drawer. If you haven't used something in the past year, it's time to throw it out! Throw out anything that is clumpy or smells bad, and make a list of the new make-up you'll need.

♥ Clean your make-up brushes. You should be doing this at least once a week. Use a drop of mild shampoo or cleanser, swirl the brush on your hand a few times, then rinse it clean! Remember to lay it flat to dry on a towel. [If you store it upright when it's still damp, the water can run into the handle and ruin it.]

♥ Clean out your purse and wallet. Old receipts, gum wrappers, lone pennies...! Make sure everything has its place, and that your purse is stocked with all of the essentials you'll need during the day!

♥ Buy a new calendar & day planner. I like the Llewellyn's Witches' Calendar and Datebook but there are plenty of great options out there! You can get a cute Sanrio day planner, or an inspirational planner. Then you can take the time to mark any important dates [doctor's appointments, birthdays, etc.]

♥ Delete old accounts and change your password(s). Do you really need six different e-mail accounts? Delete the old accounts you no longer use and update all of your passwords for the new year.

♥ Revamp your playlists. I bet you've been listening to the same music for the last six months. Delete those songs you always skip over and add a few new songs to the mix!

♥ Buy new bedding. Is there anything better than a change of bedding?! Invest in some flannel sheets for these winter months, a bright comforter or a firm new pillow.

♥ Go through your Facebook friends list. What's more important - hundreds of strangers knowing every detail of your personal life [and vice versa], or keeping in touch with a handful of close friends and family? Delete anyone you haven't spoken to this past year. Your news feed will be less cluttered and you will be able to see what's important.

♥ Invest in a new journal. Every day, jot down a few lines [or paragraphs] about what you did. Won't it be lovely to read it through at the end of 2016 and remember all the fun you had?

Stay tuned for 'A Fresh Start for the Soul'.

[Tiny] Boxing Day Shopping Haul ♡

Hi everyone ♥  I love Boxing Day sales because I get to stock up on skincare gift sets & presents for next year =D however, this year not many stores in my town had Christmas stuff. As such, there weren't many Boxing Day sales =/ Here are the few things I did manage to get.

I love Marcelle~ I picked up this fabulous hydration skincare set for $12!

My beloved fox cosmetic bags. I probably have too many cosmetic bags...

AHS: Coven! My favourite season so of course I had to buy it for $10.

GOT Season 2~ My 'neesan gave me season 1 for Christmas. The seasons are usually so expensive [here, at least] but this was only $24.

I didn't get any gift wrap this year like I usually do because we have so much now. I'm pretty happy with my haul, though =)
